Autism Resources for Families

There are many online resources for parents.

Below are various websites to get started:

Books that we recommend for caregivers of children with Autism:

  • Autism Spectrum Disorder: What Every Parent Needs to Know (2nd Edition) by Rosenblatt & Carbone
  • Quirky Kids: Understanding and Supporting Your Child With Developmental Differences by Klass and Costello

It is important to provide your child with early behavioral interventions. These can be provided through:

  • Early Intervention for children under 3 years of age
  • The Department of Education (DOE) should provide supports through an individualized education plan (IEP) for children 3 years of age and older
  • Your insurance company, such as applied behavior analysis (ABA) or additional speech/occupational therapy
  • Paying privately for these services
  • State supports, in NYC this is called the Office for Persons with Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD)

Social Skills Group:

  • The Seaver Center for Autism at Mount Sinai has ongoing research studies that may offer free treatment to children with ASD, even if your insurance isn’t accepted: https://icahn.mssm.edu/research/seaver

Parent Supports:

  • Sinergia Autism Initiative
  • Westchester Institute for Human Development has events/webinars for parents
  • ADAPT Community Network
  • QSAC.com
  • YAI
  • INCLUDEnyc
  • JCC Manhattan
  • Child Mind Institute
  • Autism Speaks Autism Response Team: can call 1-888-288-4762 or fill out the online form and the team can connect you with tools/resources
